Welcome to Gilliam Gallery, the collection of Artwork by Nicolas Gilliam, out of Charlotte, NC. I create sculptural paintings using layers of wood to construct a design, making the painting three dimensional. Following construction, abstractions composed of illusive shapes and fragmented images are painted onto the wooden layers. Integrating unique sculptural style with visionary concepts, custom artwork can be created for clients. In addition, select sculptural paintings are reproduced into limited edition prints with a wide variety of framing options.
Creative Dimensions accepts personal check, credit card and cash. All purchases come with a 10 day free look period (not including custom work).
All original and commission paintings are sold with a bill of sale and letter of authenticity. The sale of an original is more than just business, it means the buyer is moved by the painting and is willing to invest in me and my vision.
Artist Statement
As an artist, I want to share my interpretation of the world and my life. I use abstract painting to capture emotion from personal experiences that viewers can relate a particular feeling to, like an intimate moment or hearing a musician perform. I create an arrangement of integrating forms and illusive shapes with manipulated light sources to fragment compositions while showing visual depth.
Interested in depth created from the third dimension as well, I include aspects of sculptural elements in my work. I construct “Layered Surface Paintings” using sheets of wood, metal, and glass with shapes cut out to expose multiple painting surfaces. The assembled layers are raised allowing shadows to interact with the viewer’s perception. I use oil paints to create movement and visual balance on the manipulated surfaces. These layered paintings are very sculptural to create depth and space, yet painted and framed using traditional methods, thus linking two and three dimensional art.
I am an artist to visually communicate my ideas of life with the world. When a piece of art is created, the artist shares their soul with the work, a boundless connection never to be broken. It is my goal to share this moment with the world, unleashing my passion for self-exploration and expression through my art.
Artist Bio
A native of North Carolina, I was born in Greensboro on October 24th, 1979. Since a young child, I have enjoyed drawing, working with wood tools, and using color to portrait my emotions. My imagination combined with my love of color and the arts, guided me to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My interest in engineering and computer techniques, along with having studied Graphic Design, Sculpture, and Illustration, allow me to incorporate a variety of forms of art into elaborate three-dimensional paintings. Since graduating in 2003, I have started my own business, shown and sold my work at various festivals, restaurants, corporate lobbies, and art galleries throughout the southeastern United States. I have made my passion for creating art into my career and plan to explore new ideas and improve my concept with each piece of artwork I create. My analytical nature, determination, and good work ethics enable me to visually communicate my artistic interpretations of life with the world.
